Restoration or renovation?

Restoration

Restoration is the repair, and sometimes the upgrade of your home, using similar if not the same materials as used originally. This requires a sympathetic approach to the fabric and style of the building, and its surroundings.

The building above is Morgan School which suffered a catastrophic fire and was completely restored to its former glory. Mustard Construction worked on the restoration of the roof.

Generally speaking, traditional homes were built with organic or natural materials and any repairs tend to require adherence to that princple. Attention to detail is of paramount importance to ensure a successful project. We will give your property that attention.

We continue to carry out Restoration projects here in Dunedin and have saved a number of historically important homes and buildings including:

The Station Masters Cottage in York Place.

Late 1800's Fisherman's cottages in historic Careys Bay.

Corstophine House Conservatory & Glasshouse.

An Early Settlers cottage in Roseneath, originally built in the early 1880s.

Renovation

Renovation is the repair and or upgrade of your property, normally, but not restricted to, using appropriate newer products that are structurally more durable than the original materials.

These new products are tailored to meet the requirements of the building code.

This is a cost effective method of improving or extending your home but will not provide all the satisfaction that restoration methods and materials imply if your home is a character property..

We also carry out all types of additions and renovations to contemporary homes in and around the Dunedin area. Please feel welcome to give us a call, drop in or send us an e-mail to find out what options best suit your desires, needs and budget.

We carry all the nessesary licences to complete your project from Design to completion.

Remember if Restricted Building Work is involved it now requires a LBP to carry out the work.

See the dbh website for information on LBPs and what it means for you.

Bathroom Renovation

Talk to us about having your bathroom or kitchen renovated.

Thinking about doing some renovation?

  • A New Bathroom There is no reason to tolerate leaky pipes, cracked basins or toilets. Bathroom renovations don't have to cost a fortune and may not require building consent. Talk to us about your ideas and let us put a quote together for you.
  • A New Kitchen We manufacture our own bespoke kitchens in our joinery workshop. Any style or finish is available, but we specialise in a hand painted finish, ideal for retaining the integrity and character of heritage properies.

testimonials

"Mustard Construction have renovated several portfolio properties for us. We aim at the high end of the rental market and therefore purchase character properties, however many of these have been lacking in modern amenities. New bathrooms and kitchens have been installed by Mustard Construction that fit the period of the property, are immediately attractive to tenants yet are easy for us to maintain. We have always been pleased with the quality of work, adherence to timeline and the added convenience of having access to design and building services within just one company." Manager, L&R Properties

"Our early settlers cottage was in great need of repair. It was important to us to choose someone who was sympathetic towards older buildings. The work included repiling, replacing weatherboards, stripping and repainting, replacing spouting and downpipes, re-roofing and relining interior walls. All of this was managed by Mustard Construction. The work was done while being absent overseas with David sending us regular updates and photos. We found David excellent to deal with. We have been really pleased with the quality of work and are thrilled with the result."Michelle Nicholls

Double hung sash window repairs and other renovation work in 1908 cafe Portobello Dunedin. - "Really great experience from the team at Mustard. Full restoration of first floor sash windows and some floor repair on a character building. Outstanding effort from Matt and Parker and great end result. Such a big improvement for a fraction of the cost of full replacement. Highly recommend and will definitely use for other projects. ."David Morgan-Lea

Pete did a quality job and gave us the option to save some money by removing the spoil ourselves. Would highly recommend these guys and we'll be shortlisting them for our next job! "Emlyn Perry
